RE

Religion and beliefs inform our values and are reflected in what we say and how we behave. RE is an important subject in itself, developing an individual’s knowledge and understanding of the religions and beliefs which form part of contemporary society. (DfE, 2010)

Intent
Within our Religious Education curriculum at Benton Dene School it is our intent to engage, inspire, challenge and encourage our pupils, thus equipping them with the knowledge and skills to answer challenging questions, explore different religious beliefs, values and traditions and develop an understanding of the numerous religious traditions, beliefs and practices that are following in our
multi-cultural society. We want our pupils to understand how religious education promotes discernment and enables pupils to combat prejudice, preparing them for adult life, employment and life-long learning.

Implementation
At Benton Dene School we study the following religious beliefs:
● Christianity (taught at each key stage)
● Islam
● Judaism
● Hinduism
● Buddhism
We also teach our pupils diversity units, designed to consolidate their learning of all core religions and explore the diversity of traditions and beliefs within our local area. In addition, we teach ‘thematic units’ which deal with world themes such as the environment and caring for others. These units seek to enhance the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of our pupils.
RE is taught explicitly as a subject within all year groups, with each unit of study allowing for development of ‘knowledge and understanding’, ‘critical thinking’, and ‘personal reflection’. Where possible, the RE curriculum links with the wider school curriculum, to ensure knowledge and understanding is embedded and threaded through the pupils’ learning.
In addition to a progressive curriculum offer, we undertake weekly assemblies and regular religious celebrations which reflect the diversity of our community. The RE curriculum ensures that we promote positive images of people in the wider community, including their beliefs, traditions, culture, language and history.

Impact
At Benton Dene School, we seek to ensure that all pupils in our school are educated to develop spiritually, academically, emotionally and morally to enable them to better understand themselves and others and to cope with the opportunities, challenges and responsibilities of living in a rapidly changing, multicultural world
